Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS)
Full-body harness, connecting lanyard, and roof anchor rated to arrest a fall within 3.5 feet. Required by OSHA for roof work at 6+ feet elevation.

Temporary or permanent anchor points rated to 5,000 lbs. per OSHA standard. Installed before any crew member steps onto the roof surface.

Conditions That Make Roof Work Dangerous
Wet or damp surfaces
Coefficient of friction drops sharply on wet shingles — even shallow-pitch roofs become hazardous. Licensed crews halt work in rain or damp conditions.
Ice or frost
Ice on the roof surface, in valleys, or at eaves is an extreme fall hazard. Ice dam work and winter inspections require specialized equipment.
Wind above 25–30 mph
High wind creates both fall risk and material control hazard. Material can become a projectile, and stability on the roof surface is compromised.
Adjacent power lines
Metal ladders and wet roofing materials conduct electricity. Any roof work within 10 feet of overhead power lines requires utility de-energization or specialized insulated equipment.
Roofing Licensing and What It Covers for Safety
Where roofing licensing exists (requirements vary by state — see state hub pages for your state's specific requirements), licensed contractors typically must carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance. Workers' comp protects you as a property owner if a worker is injured on your property — hiring an unlicensed roofer without workers' comp can expose you to liability for injuries that occur during the work.
